Saint Paul is small enough that the local magic scene is probably three people who know each other. That is not a disadvantage — it is how most performers learn, and a smaller room is a more honest audience than a big one.
Whether you are after card tricks, coin magic, mentalism props or something for a stage set, the range in Saint Paul is the same range everyone else gets. Trick decks, gaff cards, expanded shells, forcing dice, sponge balls, cups, silks, canes and the gimmicks behind them.

Card magic
Trick decks do the heavy lifting while you learn: a Svengali deck forces a card without a single sleight, a marked deck tells you what they took, and a stripper deck lets you find it blind. Gaff cards, double backers and card gimmicks cover the rest. Most working repertoires are still mostly cards, and most of them start here.

Mentalism
The quietest magic and often the strongest. Forcing dice, mental dice boxes, prediction props, nail writers and marked material let you know a thought, a number or a word without ever touching a deck. It plays to adults, it plays in corporate rooms, and it leaves no prop to blame.

Starting out in Saint Paul
The first year is about repetition, not acquisition. Pick one effect, perform it a hundred times for real people, and only then buy the second one. Everything in the beginner collection is chosen to survive that kind of use.

Magic around Minnesota
The midwest is the historic centre of American magic manufacturing — Abbott's in Colon, Michigan has been making apparatus since 1934, and the Get-Together still draws thousands of magicians every August.
