Card Magic
Effects built around a deck of cards — the most portable, most practised discipline in magic.
A deck of cards is fifty-two objects that look identical, behave predictably, and fit in a pocket. That combination has made card magic the backbone of the craft for four centuries, and it is still where most performers do their deepest work.
The material here spans the whole range. Self-working effects that carry themselves on structure rather than sleight of hand are genuinely strong — a good self-worker will fool a room more reliably than a half-learned pass. At the other end sit gimmicked decks and utility props that let a working performer produce a miracle on demand, in someone else's hands, with their card.
If you're starting out, buy one effect and perform it fifty times before you buy a second. Card magic rewards depth far more than breadth, and an audience can always tell the difference between something you own and something you have merely bought.
