White Elephant Gifts Under $25 That People Actually Want

Nov 4, 2026 · The Editors

The trick to a white elephant gift is something everyone wants to steal. Here is what gets stolen.

A white elephant exchange is won or lost on one thing: whether anybody tries to steal your gift. The candle and the mug sit unopened in the pile. The thing people fight over is almost always something they would never buy for themselves, that they can pick up and play with the moment the paper comes off.

That rules out most of what is sold as a "gag gift", which is funny for four seconds and then goes in a drawer. What works is a small object that is either genuinely satisfying to fiddle with, or a joke that keeps working long after the party.

Desk toys: the gifts that get stolen

A Newton's cradle is the safest choice on this page. Everyone knows what it is, nobody owns one, and once it is unwrapped it will not stop clicking for the rest of the evening. It goes straight onto an office desk and stays there.

The chaos pendulum is the one people pass round. It is a hand-sized double pendulum on bearings: give it a spin and the second arm swings off the first in a pattern that never repeats. It looks like a piece of engineering because it is one.

The flip fidget is a solid metal pyramid you flick into a spin. It spins, tips, flips and keeps going far longer than seems possible, then lands flat with a clack. It is heavier than it looks, which is half the appeal.

The gear-and-chain fidget is a pair of working gears joined by a real roller chain. It suits the person at the party who takes things apart to see how they work.

Pranks that keep working

The spider prank box is a plain little wooden box. Hand it over, watch them slide the lid, and a big black spider springs out. It is one of the oldest practical jokes there is, and whoever ends up with it will use it on everyone they know by New Year.

Small, clever, and a little different

The yes-or-no decision coin settles arguments about where to eat and who deals. A leather dice cup with five dice is a bar game in a box. The Chinese dragon coin is a good-luck piece for someone who likes their gifts to mean something.

What not to bring

Anything that only works for one person in the room. White elephant gifts change hands; the best ones are good for whoever ends up with them. And skip anything for children: a grown-up exchange is the wrong place for a toy, and nobody wants to explain to their kid why the spider box is going home with someone else.

Shipping

Everything ships from our supplier overseas, and we do not quote delivery dates because we would be guessing. For a December party, order in November.
