Playing Card Holders for Seniors: What Helps at the Card Table
Nov 4, 2026 · The Editors
Card holders, large print decks and plastic cards — the simple things that keep card games comfortable for older players and tired hands.
Card games are one of the great pleasures of later life — bridge, canasta, rummy, cribbage, a weekly game with friends that has run for decades. And they are one of the first things people quietly give up when their hands start to ache or the cards get harder to read. A few simple things fix most of that.
The problem with holding cards
Fanning and gripping a hand of cards for an hour is harder work than it looks. Arthritis, a weak grip, a tremor, or simply tired hands make it uncomfortable, and a hand of thirteen cards for bridge or fifteen for canasta is a lot to hold.
Playing card holders
A card holder stands your hand up on the table so you do not have to hold it at all.
- Wooden curved trays hold a whole hand in a long, upright arc. They are steady, look good on the table, and suit long hands — canasta, rummy, bridge. A set of four seats a full table.
- Hands-free triangle holders are compact plastic stands with a slot that grips the cards in a fan. Light, cheap and easy to pack, they suit shorter hands and travel.
Either way, the hand faces you and stays hidden from the table, and both hands are free to pick up, sort and play.
Large print playing cards
Small corner numbers are the other common problem. Look for jumbo index decks, where the number and suit in the corner are printed roughly twice the usual size. They read at a glance from across the table, in low light, and through reading glasses. They are standard in poker, so they are easy to find in good quality.
Plastic cards are easier to handle
A plastic deck is slicker and springier than paper. Cards slide off the pack more easily, separate cleanly when you deal, and do not bend or stick together. Plastic cards also last for years and can be wiped clean, which matters for a deck that gets used every week.
Other small helps
- A felt or mat surface makes cards easier to pick up off a table.
- A card shuffler saves sore wrists for whoever deals.
- Good light over the table helps more than people expect.
As a gift
A set of card holders and a large print deck is a thoughtful gift for a parent or grandparent who loves cards — practical without being pointed about it. It says "keep playing", which is exactly the message.
