The Best Magic Tricks for Beginners (and Why Most Advice Is Wrong)
Oct 8, 2026 · The Editors
The usual answer is a list of easy tricks. The better answer is one trick, performed a hundred times.
Ask which tricks a beginner should buy and you will get a list. The list is not the problem — most of them are fine. The problem is that the list encourages exactly the behaviour that stops people getting good.
Buy one thing
A beginner with one effect they have performed forty times is a better magician than a beginner with twelve effects they have each performed twice. This is not a moral point about discipline. It is a practical one: magic goes wrong in performance in ways it never goes wrong in a mirror, and the only way to find those ways is repetition in front of people who are not being polite.
What makes a good first effect
Three things, in order of importance.
It should survive being watched closely. A first effect that only works from one angle will teach you to be nervous, and nervousness is far harder to unlearn than any sleight.
It should reset quickly. You will be asked to do it again. If resetting takes two minutes and a table, you will decline, and declining in front of an audience is a bad habit to acquire in your first month.
It should be something you actually like. You are about to perform this two hundred times. Enthusiasm is not optional equipment.
Where sleight of hand fits
Later than most people think. The strongest thing you can do in your first year is learn a small amount of technique extremely well, rather than a large amount badly. Self-working material is not a compromise — a well-constructed self-worker will fool a magician, and it lets you spend your attention on the part that actually creates the experience, which is what you say and where you look.
A reasonable first purchase
An ambitious card routine, a set of sponge balls, and a deck you like the feel of. That is a genuine ten-minute set for well under a hundred dollars, and it will carry you for a year while you work out what kind of performer you want to be.
Buy the second thing after the first one stops going wrong.
